SQUARE NAIL PALE ALE ~ PUBLICAN HOUSE

Square Nail is a West Coast style Pale ale. It was named after the hundreds of hand made 19th century square nails found during renovation of the brewery in Peterborough. Sampled on draught the beer poured a fairly clear coppery colour.with a finger of white head. The resilient head lasted a while before leaving lovely lacing on the glass and a foamy collar in the glass. Hops were predominant on the nose with notes of resin, floral/herbal and grapefruit (the brew was hopped with late additions of Cascade). The malts (brewed with Saskatchewan and Crystal malts) held their own too with plenty of biscuity, ready notes along with caramel and hints of orchard fruits. The full- flavoured palette is nicely balanced with bitter hops and caramel cereal malts, with floral/herbal and citrus on the finish. The body was on the heavy side for the style, the carbonation was subtle and the mouthfeel was creamy. Very pleasant, well crafted, I will return to this.

DYSANIA ~ FORKED RIVER
Dysania is an American Style Pale Ale. Sampled on draught the beer poured a slightly cloudy deep orange amber with an average sized dense off white head. The head receded into a cap and left nice lacing in its wake as it dissipated. Lots of orange and grapefruit citrus on the nose with hints of stone fruits and melons, followed by a little pine resin. The flavour has notes of bitter citrus peel, orange, stone fruit and a few tropical fruits as well. A solid caramel and biscuity malt provides backbone. The beer finished with, grapefruit and stone fruit, with an earthy piney hop which lingers. The body was light to medium and the carbonation was average. Crisp, refreshing, well balanced and quite enjoyable.
By the way Dysania is a mental disorder whic

ISSEKI NICHŌ ~ BRASSERIE DIEU DU CIEL!

Isseki Nichō is an Imperial Dark Saison made in collaboration with Tanamura Honten Co., a microbrewery from Nagano, Japan. The name of the beer translated roughly means, “two birds One Stone” in Japanese. Some tout this brew as a hybrid between a stout and a dark saison. Sampled on draught, in a tulip glass the beer poured a rich dark brown-black with a finger of tan head. The head receded after several minutes leaving lacing along the glass and finishing in a ring around the glass. The nose like the beer has a fair bit of complexity containing notes of roasted malts, dark fruit, molasses, faint smoke, coffee, dark chocolate, leather, touch of funk and peppery spice. The taste is fairly bitter, matched by strong dark roasted malts, under this cloak other flavours emerge: molasses, spicy Belgian yeast, coffee, cocoa, dark cherries, liquorice, and fruit. The finish is off dry and has a lingering bitterness - a spiciness lingers as the booziness warms. The body was creaming and medium and the fine carbonation was average. This was quite an interesting brew, not for the faint at heart, but definitely worth a try.

MOONLIGHT KETTLE BIERBUIK ~ MUSKOKA BREWERY

Bierbuik is Belgian strong dark ale. The name means beer belly in Dutch. Sampled on draught the beer poured a rich amber with garret highlights and a moderate off white head. The aroma was primarily biscuity malts and caramel, with a touch of fruitiness. The flavour has lovely caramel maltiness, with more subtle flavours of dried fruit (raisins, fig), plums and spicy Belgian yeast. The finish has a dry bitterness and the alcohol is remarkably well hidden. On a cold night these can catch up with you.

SILVER FERN ~ BEAU’S

Silver Fern is part of Beau’s Greener Futures Project and is usually only available to Beau’s beer Club members. It was a nice surprise to find it on draught at my local, thought it is a bit of a treat at $8 for 300 ml. The beer is Beau’s ‘Koru’ beer (a Belgian style pale and made using New Zealand nelson sauvin and rakau hops) aged in white wine barrels for four months. Sampled on draught the beer poured a slightly hazy dark golden colour with a dense white head. The aroma has a nice complexity to it: lemony citrus and tropical fruit mix with vinous and oaky woody notes from the barrel aging. More subtle notes of berries and nuts lie just underneath. The flavour is bright and fruity with a tart and slightly spicy peppery yeast. The mouthfeel was medium bodies, the carbonation was average and the finish was clean, refreshing and dry. The hops are nicely balanced with the brightness of the fruit and the oakiness. I really enjoyed this, it shows complexity but also restraint. I wish it were more available.
INGREDIENTS: Local spring water, organic barley malts, organic hops, brewer’s yeast.

CORNISH BREAKFAST ~ GREAT LAKES BREWERY

Cornish Breakfast is a cream ale with coffee on nitro, it is part of GLB’s Project X series. The beer is brewed with cold brewed coffee from Station Cold Brew. Sampled on draught the beer pours a reddish brown with a generous off white head. The nose has some coffee notes along with a notes reminiscent of an English mild. The flavour has a little sweetness along with some coffee notes , subtle nuttiness and a some light malts and very mild bitterness. This one fell flat for me; I found the mouthfeel to be too light bodied. The carbonation was somewhat flat too. A good idea, but needs more oomph.

CREATIVE DIFFERENCES ~ HALO
Creative differences is a dry hopped pale ale. Sampled on draught the beer poured a hazy orange amber with a generous reliant pillowy white head, that left lacing before settling into a cap. The aroma contained lots of tropical fruit - mango , papaya and passionfruit, orange along with other fruity notes. The taste too has lots of juicy fruit sweetness, especially orange and other tropicals at the forefront. This is followed by a caramel malt backbone and finishes with a slightly resiny New World hop. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with average carbonation and a slightly fruity subtly bitter finish. Very delicious, worth checking out.

FIEBRE DE CALABAZA ~ SAWDUST CITY

Fiebre De Calabaza is one crazy brew! It is a sour Bourbon barrel fermented oatmeal stout with Mexican spices and pumpkin on nitro. Sampled on draught at Sawdust City’s Annual tap takeover, this stout poured a deep mahogany brown-black with a generous pillowy beige head. The nose contains a plethora of smells: sour, spice, smoke, pumpkin, fruit, roasted malts, chocolate…. The taste is as complex. The beer’s first impression is that of a sour stout, with vinous dark fruit. This is followed by roasted malts, chocolate and cocoa and woody notes from the barrel aging and then finishes with heat from the Mexican spices and habanero at the back of your throat. The body is medium and the carbonation was average to light. There is a lot going on here, this is definitely a beer for the adventurous. Interesting but I could not have more than one.

FRAMBOISE ~ EXCHANGE BREWERY

This is another impressive beer from the Exchange Brewery. This is their interpretation of a traditional Belgian Pale Ale with raspberries. It was brewed with coriander seeds, aged for at least 3 months in French oak barrels (from Pearl Morissette Winery in Jordan) on a bed of fresh picked Niagara on the Lake raspberries (from Quiet Acres farm). Sampled on draught the beer poured a hazy reddish-pink hue with a small white head. The aroma is primarily fresh summery raspberries with a subtle laziness from the barrel aging. The raspberry notes are not overstated. The sweetness of the berries complements their tartness and subtle woodiness from the aging. The body is medium as is the carbonation and the finish is tart and off dry. This is a limited edition beer, so pick it up at the brewery or sample on draught when you can. A delish fruit beer.

THE PRINCESS WEARS GIRL PANTS ~ SAWDUST CITY BREWING
This princess is a hoppy Belgian inspired Golden Ale. Sampled on draught the beer pours a hazy light golden with a generous frothy white head. The head had both good retention and lacing. Lots of effervescence is visible. The aroma contains lots of tropical fruit (pineapple, mango) peach, citrus (lemon, orange, grapefruit) pine hops, grass, and spicy Belgian yeast. The flavour has complexity with waves of flavour. There is a spicy Belgian yeast , sweet malts and grains, tangy tropical and other fruits, grapefruit and lemon rind bitterness, a medium bitter hop kick and warming alcohol. The finish is bitter and drying, but still retaining some fruitiness. The mouthfeel is medium heavy and the carbonation is lively and prickly. This beer is an interesting mix of old world and new world host and flavours. Worth a purchase and a try.

BLUEBERRY WHEAT ~ ELLICOTTVILLE BREWING CO.

I bought a 6 pack of this brew on a day trip to Buffalo. It is quite a novelty for me to walk into a drug store and walk out with beer. Sampled from a bottle the beer poured a clear straw colour with a thick dense white head. The head receded to a surface collar and left some very nice lacing. The nose was subtle but did contain a healthy dose of blueberries with a touch of crackers wheat and a mild malt. The beer has a clean bready malt, with crackery wheat, a touch of lemon citrus and mild hop bitterness, the sweet blueberry appears and lingers a little in the aftertaste. The blueberry tastes like a fresh sweet summer pick and is not artificial at all. The mix of the graininess and blueberries almost reminded me a blueberry pie. The body was medium-light, and the carbonation was lively. The finish was dry with lingering berry sweetness. This is a very approachable summer refresher, it is just enough fruitiness, while remaining clean.

HYGGE ~ SAWDUST CITY

Hygge is a limited edition season release from Sawdust City (to be released December 1st, 2016). It is a Belgian Tripel that has been kettle soured, fermented with a Belgian Monastery yeast strain and aged/conditioned over 600 lbs of black plums. Sampled on draught the beer poured a light cloudy orange with little head. Aroma is light and contains, spicy yeasts, plums, a touch of funk and alcohol. The flavour is not overly sour which allows the fruitiness to come through. Spicy Belgian yeasts are complemented by the plums and tartness. The alcohol was on the subtle side. The mouthfeel was on the thin side and the carbonation was rather flat. This is a tasty brew but would be better with more carbonation.
BTW Hygge is a Danish word meaning, loosely translated, cosy, warm atmosphere, enjoying the good things in life with those you care about.

This season brew is a monster! Blood of Cthulhu has been rereleased for 2016 and is better than I remembered. The brew is an imperial stout that has been brewed with raspberries, cranberries and tart cherries, along with a ton of malt. Sampled from a pint on draught, this beer poured a deep ebony with a generous creamy dark tan head. The head had great retention and left beautiful lacing as it settled into a cap. The nose has lots of wasted and toasted malts, along with dark chocolate, and red berries. This beer was like a Black forest cake for adults, lots of chocolate and berry flavour, especially from the cherries. Mid palette the beer has a slightly acidic bite but finishes with a roasted bitterness and dark chocolate.. The body was medium full and the stout had a creamy thick mouthfeel. The carbonation was medium to soft. Be careful he 9% can creep up on you! A beautiful cold weather treat.

ETOILE DU NORD ~ BRASSERIE THIRIEZ

Etoile du Nord (North Star) is a blonde ale brewed with English East Kent Goldings hops. Sampled from a bottle, possibly near the end of its best before date. The beer poured a somewhat clear golden yellow with a white foamy head, which had good retention and left impressive lacing. Be careful on the pour to control the amount of particulates in your drink. The aroma contained lemony citrus, biscuit and light malts, stone fruit, hay, peppery yeasts, floral and grassy hops. The taste was a mix of sweet grainy malts and fruit, tart citrus, earth, grass, a touch of caramel, pepper, with a moderate herbal-floral hop bitterness. The finish if dry with a touch of bright citrus. A beautifully balanced brew. The beer was medium bodied with a slightly resinous mouth feel. The carbonation was average and fine. The nose has fruity (berries, citrus and orchard fruits) and earthy notes, along with malts, bread, florals, a little funk and spice(clove and others),and a light Belgian yeast. The flavour follows the nose and is equally complex, containing notes of fruits (lemon, orchard fruit), pepper, clove, Belgian yeast, honey, sweet malts, grains, grass, and a touch of tartness. The mouthfeel was medium. The carbonation was average to lively. The finish has a slight hop bitterness with a little earthy dryness. This is a complex but balanced saison. L’AMBRÉE D’ESQUELBECQ ~ BRASSERIE THIRIEZ

This French beer is a bière de garde, literally translated, it means ‘beer to keep.’ It was traditionally made in the north of France in the winter and spring. This beer comes from the French countryside in Flanders. Sampled from a bottle the beer poured a slightly hazy deep coppery amber with a dense off-white head. The head lasted a while before leaving impressive lace on the glass and settling into a ring. The nose had notes of grass and hay, funk, orchard fruits, caramel malts, noble hops and spice. The beer was nicely balanced with noble hop bitterness meshing with hearty grainy caramel malts. The nose mostly followed the nose with lots of fruit, caramel, and breadiness, with a touch of vinous sour at the end. There were also notes of wood and hay, and the spice was more pronounced that the nose let on. The body was light to medium with a creamy feel and the carbonation was pin point and average. To me this tasted like a combination of a Flanders Oud Bruin and a saison. A very nice ale, with some complexity, worth trying.

The Devil’s Pale was first released in 2016 (allegedly conceived on 6.6.06) on and was the first seasonal from Great Lake Brewery. I have seen it billed as a Pale Ale, and an India Brown Ale. It is brewed with 6 malts and 4 hops, and was advertised at the brewery as having been made with 666 kilograms of malt, 6.66 kilograms of hops, and boiled for 66.6 minutes. Sampled on draught the pour was a deep rich mahogany with an average thick tan coloured head, which settled into a ring around the glass and left beautiful sticky lacing. The aroma had a melange of resinous piney hops followed by rich malt body, caramel and molasses, dark bread and an earthiness. Hops are the first flavour, followed by heavy roasted malts the followed by a distinct bitterness. The malts have a layered richness with notes of caramel, cocoa, nuttiness and molasses as do the hops with notes of pine resin, grapefruit and a touch of other fruits. The beer is hoppy from the first whiff to the bitter lingering aftertaste, but is beautifully balanced. The mouthfeel was smooth but slightly oily too. This is Bench brewery’s second sour offering. They are a relatively new brewery from Beamsville, Ontario on the Niagara escarpment. They are committed to using as many local ingredients as possible. Mosaic Grove is a dry hopped sour beer - the brewery released Citra Grove earlier this year - so I imagine these are each single hopped. Saison and brett yeast were used in the brewing process. Sampled on draught the beer poured a slightly cloudy pale golden yellow with a white head. The nose contained hops (citrus, pine, fruitiness), citrus and tart sour. DOC PERDUE’S BOBCAT ~ COWBELL BREWING

Doc Perdue’s Cowbell is a West Coast Red Ale. Sampled on draught the beer poured a slightly opaque beautiful ruby amber with an average sized cream coloured head. The flavour had a subtle sweetness to it that complimented the leafy hop bitterness. Notes of caramel, toasted malts, pine resin, oak and herbal hops were also present. The hop aromas and taste make me wonder if this had been dry hopped, or had some hop layering. This is my first beer from this brewery, I look forward to tasting other offerings. The beer is named after Blyth’s veterinarian from the late 1880’s who was known for keeping exotic animals and loving a drink. 20 POUNDS OF PUMPKIN ~ SAMUEL ADAMS

Again it is that time of year for pumpkin beer. According to Sam Adams, pumpkin was originally used in brewing to provide fermentable sugars, now it is just used for flavouring. 20 pounds of pumpkin went into each barrel of this brew. Sampled from a bottle, the beer poured a clear coppery brown colour with hints of ruby. The beer had a generous beige head, which stuck around briefly before settling into a cap, it left some whispy lacing as it receded. The nose, which is on the mild side has notes of pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, ginger, caramel and biscuity malts. The flavour is pretty smooth and not overly pumpkin or over spiced. The taste is much like the aroma with notes of pumpkin pie spices, pumpkin, caramel and sweet bread. The finish has a brown sugar sweetness to it that is matched by mild earthy hops and a dryness from the cinnamon. The body was on the thin side medium and the carbonation was soft. This is a highly drinkable pumpkin beer due to its restraint. Nice for a change, but not a session beer for me.

RIFLEMAN’S RATION ~ BLACK CREEK BREWERY

Rifleman’s ration is advertised as a Historic Beer of Canada made by Black Creek Brewery. The beer was originally brewed to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. The beer is loosely based on a British Brown Ale that each soldier would have had daily ration for, an is brewed with local grains. The commercially available beer is not actually made at Black Creek (a pioneer village in North Toronto) but on contract with Trafalgar Ales and Meads. Sampled from a bottle, the beer poured clear reddish brown amber with a beige coloured head, that settled quickly into a ring around the glass, leaving nice lacing. The nose contained lots of roasted and toasted malts, caramel, mild leafy bitterness, maple sweetness, a hint of fruit, nuttiness, and a touch of smoke. The flavour follows as would be expected: malty, smoky, toasty, maple and brown sugar sweetness, nuts, hint of fruit and biscuits. The finish is slightly bitter with a grass English style hops. The carbonation is quite soft and still, the mouthfeel is smooth and the body is on the thin side. I think this would be very good on cask, with the warmer pour and the low carbonation. This is a quite drinkable, simple Brown Ale.

INKHORN ~ FOLLY BREWING

According the the brewery this beer is a Belgian-dubbel inspired ale with a Brettanomyces Lambicus fermentation. Sampled on draught this brew pours a reddish brown with an average beige head. The nose is quite fruity with notes of fig, raisin, vinous grapes, tart fruit, sour cherry, earthiness, spice, caramel and bready malts. The taste follows the nose - beautiful sourness, chocolate, ripe dark fruit, spice, figs, bread malts, pepper, and some vinous notes. This has a beautiful complexity with lots of flavour swirling around, but the body still remains on the light side. The toasted malts give way to a slightly lingering tartness making this a remarkably refreshing beer. The carbonation was soft. I would say this brew is not a dubbel, but much more of a Flanders Red. I really enjoyed this one, flavours marry nicely.

SÄGEMEHL STADT ~ SAWDUST CITY

It is that time of year again, days get shorter, nights get colder and beers get darker. Sägemehl Stadt is Sawdust City’s marzen/festbeir. Sampled on draught, the beer poured a clear dark amber, with a moderate blanket of cream coloured foam. The head didn’t stick around but did leave nice lacing as it receded. The nose had some floral and herbal notes along with malts, caramel, and toasted bread. The flavour is light with notes of caramel, toasted grain, tree fruit, mild nuttiness and light earthiness hop bitterness. This one is a little sweeter than others I have had, I would have preferred more leafy hop bitterness. Mouthfeel was on the thin side and the carbonation was lazy. Pleasant enough, bit just didn’t hit the mark for me.

MANGO LAGER ~ CHEETAH BREWERS INTERNATIONAL
I consumed this one while waiting for my Hakka take-out. I have never heard of them before, yet they are brewed locally. I believe they only sell to restaurants directly. Sampled from a tin, the beer poured a clear golden colour with a white head that quickly disappeared. No lacing was evident. The nose was predominantly mango. The taste too had mango at the forefront. The mango was sweet and had an artificial flavour to it, it reminded me of jello. It tasted more like a mango and beer soda than a beer brewed with mango. The mouthfeel was on the thin side and the carbonation was relaxed. I am not a fan of the artificial flavour but I could see how this may go well with a spicy Hakka or Indian dish.

GOSE ~ COLLECTIVE ARTS BREWING
Sampled from a tin, this beer poured an unfiltered hazy light straw yellow with a small white head, which left little lacing as it disappeared quickly. The nose was light and full of bright citrus (lemon, lime and orange), with crackery wheat malts, light tart sourness and a hint of coriander. The flavour follows the nose with the addition of mild saltiness and a touch of white pepper. There is very low hop bitterness, so the salt added a nice dryness to the finish. Salt and citrus linger a short while on the aftertaste. The gose has a spritzy mouthfeel with lots of active carbonation. I like the style, and this was no exception. What it lacks in complexity it almost makes up for in it’s refreshing qualities.
Hops: saaz
Flavour: coriander and pink Himalayan sea salt
Malts: 2 row, pilsner and wheat

OAKTOBERFEST ~ BLACK OAK BREWING CO.

Oaktoberfest is a seasonal märzen and the only lager Black Oak makes. Sampled on draught the beer pours a slightly hazy rich copper topped with a generous frothy beige. As the head slowly receded it left lovely lacing before settling to a ring around the glass. The nose contained lots of lightly roasted malts, along with grains, cereal, orchard fruits, and caramel. More subtle notes of grass and nuts were also evident as the beer warmed. The taste was malt forward, with notes of caramel, with a spicy herbal grassy bitterness at the finish. The carbonation is medium, as is the body. This is a really nice example of the style. I look forward to having a few.
Märzen beers are made for Oktoberfest. The beer brewed for this occasion were traditionally lagers brewed in March and allowed to ferment slowly over the summer months.

AMBER SOLACE ~ SMITHAVENS
Smithaven’s has recently changed their name from Smithworks and in turn have renamed their Amber lager, or fest beir, Amber Solace. Sampled from a bottle the beer poured a slightly hazy rich coppery amber colour with a generous beige head that disappeared quickly. The nose is quite light with subtle notes of grains, light orchard fruits, caramel, grass and malt. The taste is much better than the nose would suggest. Grains, caramel, toasted malts, fruit give was to a gentle bitterness. The carbonation was average and the mouthfeel was medium bodied and slightly creamy. Not a ‘spectacular’ beer but quite a drinkable Vienna Lager.

MORALITÉ ~ DIEU DE CIEL! & THE ALCHEMIST BREWERY

Moralité is an IPA, created in collaboration between Quebec’s Dieu de Ciel! and Vermont’s, The Alchemist Brewery. Sampled on draught, the beer poured a slightly hazy golden amber with a generous frothy off white head, that left lots of lacing. The nose is bursting with hops and tropical fruit (pineapple, papaya, mango). Notes of resinous pine, citrus (lemon, orange and grapefruit), bready grains, caramel, earthiness, and yeast also make appearances. The flavour follows the complexity of the nose. Pine, grapefruit, caramel, fruitiness (citrus & tropical), floral, grass, combined with a slight sweetness swirl and party on my palette. The finish is somewhat dry with a lasting bitterness. The body is medium-full and the texture is creamy and smooth. The carbonation was on the soft side. It is rare that I have a beer from DDC that I don’t enjoy, this was no exception. Quite quaffable for such a high IBU and ABV. I loved the complex flavours and the balance between the bitterness, sweet fruitiness and the malts. Bravo!

COLLECTIVE PROJECT : SOUR PUMPKIN SAISON ~ COLLECTIVE ARTS

This sour pumpkin saison is Collective Arts second new offering this autumn. The beer is brewed with fresh roasted pumpkins (done in house) and the spices that go along with it. Sampled on draught the beer poured a cloudy coppery amber with a thin off white head that left almost no lacing as it receded. The nose had lots of tart sourness as well as more subtle smells of pumpkin, nutmeg and spice, pepper, citrus and fruity yeast. Quite different from other pumpkin beers, this one starts off with a sour start, followed by more saison flavours and subtle pumpkin pie. Lots of lemon, some tart orchard fruit, nutmeg and cinnamon, vegetal pumpkin, and grains also show up. The carbonation was average, the mouthfeel was medium-light, and the finish was slightly astringent and dry. A difficult beer to rate as it defies being categorized. I like a sour and this one was quite refreshing and restrained in its pumpkiny-ness.

COLLECTIVE PROJECT WET HOP WHEAT ALE ~ COLLECTIVE ARTS

This wet hopped wheat beer is a new offering from Collective Arts for the fall of 2016, and their very first wet hopped beer. It is brewed with only Canadian wheats, malts and hops. Sampled on draught, the beer poured a golden straw with a thin white head that reduced quickly to a cap. The nose was quite hoppy with notes of tropical fruit, especially mango, grass and grains. The flavours have a nice complexity, including: floral, tropical fruit, citrus, pungent hops, pine and grainy malt sweetness. The body is medium, as is the carbonation. The finish is crisp with a little lingering bitterness.
The hops were grown in Collingwood at Clear Valley Farm, as freshness in this technique is important. Clear Valley is one of the first farms returning to growing and harvesting hops (they grow more than 70 varieties) in Ontario. The hops were used within hours of harvesting. All hops were added within the last five minutes of the boil.

Hops: Chinook, Pearle
Malts: 2-row, wheat, Briess, and cara malt

LOVE TRIANGLE ~ INDIE ALE HOUSE

Love Triangle is a three hop IPA from Indie Ale House in Toronto’s west end. Each time it is brewed a different combination of three hops are used. I believe this batch used Ahtanum, Cascade and Centennial hops. Sampled on draught this brewed poured a slightly cloudy golden yellow with a hint of orange. It had a very generous frothy white head with good retention before receding into a cap and leaving some lovely lacing. There ware lots of citrus (grapefruit and orange) and tropical fruit, along with a herbal quality and mild malts on the nose. The flavour is quite hoppy – impressive for the not so high ABV. Notes of tropical fruit, citric hops, a touch of resin and a subtle malt made up the flavour profile. The finish was dry and crisp, with a lingering astringent bitterness. The carbonation was lively, and it had an average body with a creamy mouthfeel. I am fast becoming a big fan of IPAs. Nice one Indie Ale house!
